Pros: The strategy elements help to make the core game a lot more interesting, and at the ruler level the options are fairly involved. In Short: Almost exactly the same features as Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires, and although it’s still more entertaining than the main game the lack of effort put in is downright insulting.
The best strategy here is just to ignore the game and hope all concerned put in a proper effort next time. No doubt that will be riddled with microtransactions as well, but at least in that context it will seem reasonably fair.ĭynasty Warriors 8 Empires isn’t quite as vapid and repetitive as the main games, but when you’re talking about Dynasty Warriors not quite as vapid as usual is still very vapid indeed. If you’ve never played a Dynasty Warriors game before, or just not an Empires spin-off, then Koei are preparing a free-to-play edition of the game – and that at least should be interesting for those that have always been curious about the franchise but sensibly wary of committing any money to it.
But after literally minutes of fun painting our steeds pink and then drawing a John Thomas on our faction banner that particular innovation quickly lost its appeal. This allows you to customise the look of your generals, soldiers, and even horses. Of course it’s more fun not to stick to historical accuracy, but one of the most frustrating things about Dynasty Warriors is how little real effort it would take to make it a genuinely interesting game.īut effort is sorely lacking in Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires, and the only significant difference between this and the last Empires game is the expanded Edit mode. Dynasty Warriors is ostensibly set in 3rd century China but we’re pretty sure Xun Yu, whoever he really was, didn’t have a magic rod that could create electric fences out of nowhere. The combat remains mind-numblingly basic, as you cut down brainless enemies by the dozen with your tiny set of moves, but the increased importance in taking down the enemies’ supply chain, and liberating bases, does add an increased tactical element.Īlthough there are various new weapons, compared to Dynasty Warriors 8, there’s only one new character to play as. Which even if you enjoy Dynasty Warriors still feels more like a punishment than a reward, given how long it can take to finish a battle. You can just skip straight ahead to being a ruler but the fundamental problem with Empires is that when you’re finished ordering people around you then have to play the main action game.
